Steps to make Papaya Chana Dal Curry:
- Wash and soak chana dal in water for about 20-30 minutes.
- Drain it and transfer it to a pressure cooker along with papaya cubes. Add 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt and turmeric powder. Close the lid and put the pressure cooker on medium heat for 1-2 whistles. Remove from the heat and release the pressure. Keep it aside.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and then chopped onion. Fry till onion turns brown. Add ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell of garlic goes away. Now add chopped tomato and cook till soft. Next add turmeic powder, chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt to taste. Saute for few minutes till oil leaves the sides of the pan.
- Now pour the boiled chana dal and papaya into the pan. Mix it well with the spices and cook on a low flame for few minutes.
- Then add garam masala powder and mix well. Cover and turn off the flame.
- Serve hot garnished with chopped coriander leaves and onion rings. This goes well with roti, paratha or rice.
LENTILS: I use chana dal here for its shape and texture - sold in the international section of some Coles supermarkets. In the same pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds and saute it. Chana dal fry or curry pairs great with roti or poori. I served it with luchi and it was amazing. Perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
