- Prepare 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- Prepare 3 tbsp dry white wine (choose a wine you like)
- Make ready 1 salt and pepper to taste (1-2 tsp each usually)
- Make ready 1 tsp + red pepper flakes (optional)
You can store this sauce in the refrigerator for later or freeze it! Pizza sauce should be kept basic, different from pasta sauces, there's no onion, no basil etc. only the basic required ingredients. You will add those other ingredients freshly in your pizza toppings later. San Marzano tomatoes are traditionally used in Neapolitan pizza sauce.
Instructions to make Basic Pasta/Pizza Sauce:
- Heat oil in 2-3 qt pot at med-hi. Add onions and garlic. Cook until onions become translucent. (approx 2-3 min)
- Add remaining ingredients and bring to boil momentarily then simmer covered. Stir occasionally. (45 min)
- Transfer sauce to blender or food processor and blend to desired consistency. (chunky sauce - a few good pulses; blend full speed if preferred smooth)
- NOTE Add diced bell peppers or different cheeses for different flavors of sauce
